Nearly one in four adults in the United States lives with a disability, yet they continue to face persistent equity gaps driven by systemic barriers to finding and sustaining employment. The unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities stands at 7.2%, more than double that of individuals without disabilities (3.5%). Additionally, 30% of workers with disabilities are employed part-time—often not by choice—compared to just 16% of their non-disabled peers. They are also significantly more likely to experience job instability and earn lower wages, with 27% living below the federal poverty level, compared to 11% of those without disabilities.
These disparities are not a reflection of ability or ambition, but the result of structural obstacles such as inaccessible workplaces, non-inclusive hiring practices, limited transportation options, and insufficient accommodations or support. The result is a labor market that systematically excludes a large, capable, and motivated segment of the population from full economic participation.
